I love Amerie and she's a beautiful and amazing singer, there's just one thing I think that's stopping her from getting the attention she deserves....The fact that all of her songs sound very similar. Idk if she's always worked with the same producers or what.
she only worked with the same producer on her first two albums... but even her 2nd album had a variety of producers. her 3rd album, which was a departure from her signature sound (which saw her work with all new producers and sound engineers), was released only in europe and asia because she decided to leave her label. i think that she just has a signature sound. i don't think that's a bad thing though. staying true to your aesthetic. i think she's a breath of fresh air in an industry filled with autotune-tinged, fluff-peddling puppets. what i think is stopping her from getting the attention she deserves is homogeneity. the fact that mainstream is saturated with one particular style of music, so when something different comes around, it gets overlooked or frowned upon because it doesn't fit in to one particular mold.
Well if we're speaking on homogeneity in the music realm, lets drop the conversation on Amerie, and pick it back up on speaking about Janelle Monáe. Amerie isn't too different imo. I like her, but she doesn't stand out in the crowd of typical R&B singers. That's just my opinion.
i think when amerie first came out she was a lot different than your typical r&b chick. BUTTTT... her producer started giving her sound to peeps. but i digress... let's talk about janelle monae?? i think she's dope... but she ruined her career by signing to badboy.
oooh... back to amerie for a second. what's different about her... what stands out... is the fact that she can have an intelligent conversation about anything and everything from international politics to fine arts to hip hop to rock to literature. she's intelligent, unlike other r&b chicks. suffice it to say, her education is what separates her from the rest of the pack
